The boy's family rents land on the oil company, which comes in, drills, and leaves everything exactly like it was, clean and unspoiled apart from the family has a little more money. (Yes, it was funded from the Standard Oil Company.)

The boy spends most of his time on his narrow boat (pirogue), floating over the bayous, prime snake and alligator habitat, together with his pet raccoon.
